New plaque by Awards Inc.honors Carl Jackson at Morrison Park.

A new plaque has been given to us by Award's Inc. (on the square in Glasgow), which honors Carl Jackson. The dedication of the Carl Jackson Tabernacle took place on Sept. 11, 2016, but the brass plaque to honor him was not yet prepared for the dedication. Awards Inc. has donated the plaque to Morrison Park and it will soon be permanently placed on the Tabernacle. Carl Jackson and his family were the largest contributors to the restoration of the park. Mr. Jackson's uncle, Rev. J.L. Piercy was a great friend of Dr. Morrison's , and went around the world with him in 1909 on an evangelism tour. See posts on this blog dated 1-27-2013 "J.L. Piercy remembered", and "J.L. Piercy cabin reconstructed", for more information. We are so thankful for the Carl Jackson family, and are so thankful to Awards Inc. for donating this wonderful brass plaque to honor and remember this special, and most generous man. Below is a biography of Carl Jackson written in by his son in honor of his father, recorded in the dedication program from September 11, 2016.
Carl Kenneth Jackson was born April 11, 1927 in Glasgow, KY to Ernest Harlow Jackson and Nannie May Piercy. Being the youngest of five children, family became an important part of his life at an early age as he lost his father when he was eight years old. His oldest brother, Joe Lee Jackson, became a surrogate father to him and he was supported to a great extent, by his other three siblings, Margaret, Thomas and Paul. He grew up on a farm on Glover Road, off the Burkesville Road, and use to walk to Vernon school on Vernon School Road, where he received his education. He was baptized in Falling Timber Creek and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.
He enlisted in the U. S. Army during World War II and served in both France and Germany. After his honorable discharge from the Army in 1949, he returned to Glasgow, KY, where he met Roberta Ann Moran. They were married on November 2, 1949 by his uncle, the Rev. J. L. Piercy (Jehu Louis), a protégé of the Rev. Henry Clay Morrison. They were married in his uncle’s house in Glasgow, KY, which he later bought from him in 1959. As a bonus, the house included his uncle’s extensive library of religious and other literary works. They had two children, Steven Lee and Margaret Ann. Tragedy struck his life again on August 11, 1965 when his wife was killed in a car accident.
Although Carl had no college education, his entrepreneurial spirit was well versed in business. His business career started in many places in Glasgow including, as co-owner of J & F Furniture and later, as the operating manager of the Uptowner Hotel and Restaurant. After leaving Glasgow, he went to Elizabethtown, KY, where he managed the Holiday Inn and Restaurant off of I-65. He later retired from Lowe’s as the building products manager, after traveling with Lowe’s to Owensboro, KY, Nashville, TN, and San Marcos, TX.
Carl’s life also included many civic and political endeavors, including serving as a Glasgow city council member for two terms, where he was greatly admired and respected by the people he represented. His family also had a history of Masons, which he became one in his early career, and eventually became a Master of Allen Masonic Lodge #24. He always loved his association with the Masons.

In the end of the Rev. J. L .Piercy’s life, Carl was a dedicated caregiver and spent many hours with him at the Glasgow Community Hospital. One of his last road trips from his retirement home in Louisville, KY, before his death on January 13, 2015, was to Morrison Park. He was so proud of the wonderful work that had been done by the many volunteers and the lasting footprint that Morrison Park would have in Barren County. He would be so happy and proud today to have the Tabernacle dedicated to him.

A MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE THE LORD WANTS YOU TO HEAR. "HOLINESS". This may seem strange coming from the chiefest of sinners, but the Lord has directed me to preach a message on Holiness,SUNDAY MORNING OCTOBER 30, 11 A.M.
This is a 5th Sunday. Many churches will not have services. May I ask you consider coming to Morrison Park. I believe you will be deeply touched and affected, but hopefully encouraged and blessed by His message. It is my opinion, every Christian who reads this should be here. I am assured it is the Lord's opinion, and I hope it will be your opinion too. I (Gary Bewley), the old sinful preacher will seek most dutifully to be obedient to His will. Please consider this prayerfully. I am not seeking to preach to you another religion, nor another gospel, such a man must be accursed, I will be preaching, what to many is an almost forgotten doctrine. Please be prayerful about this service. There is much to be gained, or much to be lost by your coming, or not coming. Hope to see there Sunday morning. There is room for all. Love, Gary Bewley

Dedication of the tabernacle at Morrison Park Glasgow, Kentucky

A great crowd was on hand Sunday evening Sept. 11 2016 for the dedication of the Carl Jackson Memorial Tabernacle at Morrison Park. After a message based on a sermon by Henry Clay Morrison the tabernacle was officially dedicated. Boyd's Creek Methodist Church, and Siloam Baptist Church provided a pot luck dinner on the ground, and an evening of gospel music by several performers, including, The Joyful Sounds. The weather Sunday was so splendid, and it was so wonderful to see so many people at Morrison Park once again, with wonderful fellowship and a heart full of Christian love and worship toward our Savior.

Donation of a Cross to Morrison Park, by Chris Walker and Two Brothers Construction

Chris Walker (left), and Zack Folden with the cross they made and donated to Morrison Park. It is such a beautiful cross, made with great detail and craftsmanship. It has lights inside that can change color and intensity. There is no way to put a price on such a marvelous gift. It has appropriately been named the crown Jewell of the tabernacle. We can never thank you enough for everything you have done.

Sponsor a bench at Morrison Park

Okay! Here I am begging again. The Morrison Park Tabernacle is almost done. One of the last projects is the construction of the Benches. Chris Walker, of Two Brothers Construction, has freely and generously offered to make the benches for us. The one pictured is one he made and donated from material we had left. It is about 4 ft. long. We will be needing several 14 ft. benches, and then several of various other sizes depending on the selected spot. If anyone would like to spo...nsor a bench, a memorial plate, or a plate to honor someone could be placed on the bench. A 14 ft. bench would be $100.00, smaller ones would be some less, the idea is to cover the costs of material. Awards Inc. will be providing the plates. If anyone is interested, contact Gary Bewley 2731Tompkinsville Rd. Glasgow, Ky. 42141. 270-834-9553, or glbewley@glasgow-ky.com.

An Angel of Morrison Park, Delbert Birge Has Died.

I have only given this honorary title to very few, but without a doubt, Delbert Birge was an Angel of Morrison Park. Delbert came to help us, and he stayed. He did so much to rebuild the Piercy cabin, and so much work on the other structures. But, more than his work and skill, he brought his love and friendship. What a joy he was. He made hard work, fun. It was because he was there. We love you and mourn your passing. We will never forget what you did here. The family of Delbert is in our prayers.                                                                 Gary Bewley
Buck Riddle, left, and Delbert on the right. Both worked so hard, for so many days, and neither took one cent. They did it for me, for the Lord and for all they believed the Lord was going to do at dear old Morrison Park.

Morrison Park Memorial in Memory of Joe Bailey

A $50.00 donation was made to Morrison Park Restoration in memory of Joe Bailey by Fendall and Marjorie Strode. We are so grateful for this contribution in Memory of Mr. Bailey. Joe's father and mother were great supporters of Morrison Park. His father Paul Bailey was saved here under Rev. Morrison's preaching, and took care of the grounds for many years. Joe's brother, Marshall is on the Board of directors for Morrison Park.

Work has begun on the new Morrison Park tabernacle.

Work began last week on the new Morrison Park tabernacle. The first of the three old original metal trusses was put in place this morning. We are so excited to see the tabernacle coming back to life. We thank and praise the Lord for letting this dream come true.

A trip to Indian Springs Holiness Camp Meeting Flovilla Ga.

This weekend I made a trip to Indian Springs Holiness Camp Meeting in Flovilla Ga., south of Atlanta. This camp meeting was organized in 1890, ten years earlier than Morrison Park. Indian Springs has continued to grow and flourish and is most remarkable. With over 125 homes, cabins, apartments, trailers, motor homes, and even a small hotel, it is like a little city in itself. A great number of people assemble here every year for a two week revival/camp meeting. Most of them live on the grounds, eat, sleep, visit, and worship the Lord with numerous bible studies and preaching services each day.
Henry Clay Morrison used to preach here most every summer. In 1930, and 1931, Morrison spent two weeks here, only to immediately travel to Glasgow Kentucky for another two week meeting. On another occasion in 1938 Morrison left Morrison Park, this time heading to Indian Springs. Morrison often spent his entire summer involved in such campaigns for the Lord. I traveled to Indian Springs with the intent to see this grand ole camp meeting, attend the services, and to walk where Morrison walked.

Left; Morrison and his wife Betty at Indian Springs, the last summer of his life, Aug.1941, age 84.
Below left; Nancy Richey and I stand in front of the same home where Morrison was pictured 75 years earlier. It was such a thrill to see this old apartment house almost the same as it was 75 years ago.

Morrison right at the tabernacle at Indian Springs, and me, ( Gary Bewley) standing in the same spot over 75 years later. Oh' what I would give to here him preach then.

New Tabernacle Work Set to Begin at Morrison Park, Two Brothers Construction

Work is set to soon begin on the new tabernacle at Morrison Park.  The structure is to be built on the exact spot where the original altar area of the old tabernacle once stood. The new tabernacle will be built over, but not upon the old concrete pad that once served the altar area. The concrete is far from perfect but it is usable, and for costs sake, it had to be utilized. If the time ever comes when it is economically possible for a new floor, the structure will not have to to disturbed. The Tabernacle will be approx. 80 ft x 24 ft, slightly narrower than first planned. This will allow for the use of the original metal trusses from the old tabernacle to be used. The exact date of the construction of the original tabernacle is not known, but a 1913 article, states "the park has a large new tabernacle."  The original tabernacle was enlarged by Rev. H.C. Morrison in 1931, but there is no doubt the rounded top metal trusses go back to the original structure. After much seeking and much prayer, the Lord led us to "Two Brothers Construction", who have been so excited at the opportunity to build the new tabernacle, and we are so comforted to have found someone with the skills to utilize the old trusses in the new building. Unfortunately the trusses are the only things usable from the original structure. It was so important for us to use them. We feel the size of the new structure is what we can presently afford, however; as time continues and if circumstances dictate the need, and if more finances become available, the tabernacle could always be enlarged to accommodate any future need. After the completion of the structure, a decking will have to be build for the podium area, and it will have to be wired for electricity. We are optimistic all this can be accomplished in the next several weeks, and that the tabernacle could be ready for use by early fall. We are so excited at the reality, that a new tabernacle will soon grace the grounds at Morrison Park. It has been a long hard road to get to this point. Many prayers have gone out, and so many have been offered up for the success of the park, We realize that this could never have been accomplished without the generosity of such wonderful people who have so freely and cheerfully given. We love you all, and can never repay your kindness, and trust in us to accomplish this goal. Please continue to pray for the parks success, and that all will go as planned. God bless you all.

Tabernacle Plans at Morrison Park

After many months of fundraising, and soliciting donations, it seems we have reached a place where we must make a decision about the tabernacle, and what to build. We have, thank the Lord, reached an amount we were hoping at the very least, would be possible to raise. With donations and pledges, we have approximately $21,000. If we could build the tabernacle ourselves and eliminate much of the labor, this would greatly enhance what we could do, however; we have to deal with the situation we have. There is no one now available with the necessary skills to do this, therefore we must hire the laborers. We have an estimate that should allow us to build a 80 x 30 structure over the existing concrete, wood frame, using the original metal trusses, metal roof, and partially enclosed with brown metal. We will hopefully, with this amount have the resources to build the podium/pulpit area, and do the necessary electrical writing for the building. Any additional monies beyond this work would likely need to go toward some type of seating for the tabernacle. We are very thankful for those who gave much, and likewise, so thankful for those who could only afford to give a little. I am personally disappointed by many who chose to do nothing. But, I do rejoice that the Lord has answered our prayer, and Lord willing we will soon have a tabernacle where services will be held. Mike Wilson, "Two Brothers Construction," can build a structure similar in design to the photo sketch above. They are very excited about this work, and should be able to start the project by mid-June. Several trees have to be removed that interfere with the building. Bob Bell has taken on the project to remove the trees. We thank him for this work and all he and his wife Edie have done, to beautify the park with their glorious flowers and landscaping. Thanks again to everyone that has helped out, given, and made the building of the tabernacle possible. Please continue to pray for our efforts as we continue on. God Bless you all , Gary Bewley

Bro. Dale Copas preached the Easter Sunrise Service at Morrison Park

Bro. Dale Copas preached the Easter Sunrise sermon at Morrison Park Sunday morning. Bro. Copas gave a most memorable message about the risen Savior and His saving grace. I have not heard any minister proclaim God's word with any greater power and spiritualness, than that which I witnessed Sunday morning. The Lord was truly with us and I think all were blessed. Three hundred dollars was given by those in attendance Easter morning, for the rebuilding of the tabernacle. Bro. Dillard and Mary Rigsby gave $100.00, Bro. Copas took no money, and gave all his offerings to the Park. Everyone in attendance I think gave something. God bless Bro. Copas and each one who came and gave. What a blessed morning we had. Praise the Lord! Gary Bewley

Good Friday at Morrison Park.

Morrison Park had a good Friday, with a lot of great helpers. Ricky Spillman provided gravel for our driveway, and a wonderful group of young college students from Chicago Il. came and worked all evening cleaning an illegal dump site that exist at rear of the park. These young peole completely filled a dumpster. It is incrediable to conceive how some people could be so disrespectful and unconcerned that they would throw mountains of trash on someone elses property, but even m...ore incrediable is to know, that a group of students would spend their spring break, to come to our county, to help clean us up. Peggy Nims worked with these students, and John Stephens brought us a county dumpster and arranged their coming.

Thanks to everyone for their help, but especially for these young students who worked in our area all month doing tremendous work. God Bless You All, Gary Bewley

GALE E. RENNER ANGEL OF MORRISON PARK

An Angel of Morrison Park, my friend, Gale E. Renner from Batavia Il. Although Gale has only visited Glasgow a few times, through our friendship he has felt led to give to the Morrison Park Tabernacle Fund. Gale has donated $210.00 himself. While others have given more, Gale has done something most people have not. Gale contacted all his friends in Illinois and across the nation to please give too. His efforts has brought contributions totaling $340.00 from as far away as California and Arizona. These people will likely never be here, to see and enjoy the benefits of their generosity, yet they gave something, and it all helps so much. If everyone will give and ask your friends and family to give, even just a little, we can have something very nice at Morrison Park. Morrison Park is your park, your history, and for your community. Thanks, Gary Bewley ( Gale is pictured at the Ulysses S. Grant home in Galena Il.) Send your tax deductible donations to Morrison Park Camp Association, 3731 Tompkinsville Rd. Glasgow, Ky. 42141

90 Days To Go! What Shall We Build?

The time is at hand for the re-building of the Tabernacle at Morrison Park. It will begin (always Lord willing) Spring 2016. It is our wish to build something everyone will enjoy and be proud of. This is our opportunity, but we can only build with what we have. The park belongs to the community. There is no outside funding of any kind. It is historic and should be something we could take much pride in. Let's pray people will do all they can for something so important. Please give what you can.  Please look below for a list of all those who have contributed. God Bless you all, Gary Bewley
